Phase 3

(02)

After shifting my idea to look into performance from simulation installations I decided to look to create
this board to breakdown each artists capacity.

July 12

However there was not enough time to do this hence I started looking into 1 artist,
that is Laetitia Ky. This decision helped me to narrow down.

The idea of multiple people working on my head in matching outfits.

Aspects of the Hair  Braiding or plaiting experiemt tests
Hair Timings - Time, - The time it takes to do ones hair can vary
from one style to another.
Hair Connections - Social connection, - The interaction/discussions that
occurs between a hairdresser and the hair-dressed even if meeting them
for the first time.
Hair Culture/Suppressions - Cultural suppression, - How our hair was once
seen as not good enough.
Hair Proximity/Intimacy - Closeness, Proximity and intimate positions of hair
application.
Hair Textures - Textures, The different hair textures, from ABC - hair
porocity etc.
Hair Stylings - Styling/Sculpting, - The different hair stylings after the
braiding process.

Ideas for the final output of performers wearing cohesive attires

Hence the trials began with my friends at school.

The aspects are also broken down in this section to create an ambience.
Even though these were tests theye were representative of the actions of
the performers. However the aspect of space was not applied.

Giving the performers instructions that on what the need to do in actions.
Outfit and hair looks. The discovery of such information through the interviews,
gave me the role of the choreographer.

The name and concept of scapes is born with the idea and reference of the outside space and enironment all about hair.
Testing outside was the very next important step.

We were also applying to the moving around the location to get the feeling of the
space and also to find the different reactions in the differents parts of the Theater.
Using the stairs, the already set up sitting spots by the stairs.

Tests at the Theater. The initial stages.

The were reactions and attention which came towards us.
But more research and tests had to be done to truly look into
this topic of performance in outside spaces.

Looking at Will Dorner Performances of Bodies in urban space was good to use as reference for my project.

This image is a moodboard, with research that has the first steps of actions,
in the realm of exhibition, artworks and installations.

The next steps had a focus on colours, outfits, and actions of the performers including myself.

In this test there is a keen interest in curating the setup and the communication
we are engaging in while doing the process. Also testing of the outfits and increasing
the numbers of people in the setting to see the differences and application of these
if they embolden the performance.

Short clips of the pilot tester with more performers and colour coordination of Black and white outfits. I tried to stand out as the strory teller. Also tested another location like Kaserne.

Communication for the Performers:-

  • To engage with people and come in at different points of the act.
  • To start undoing my hair extensions by cutting the ones I have off
  • a skill they already have knowledge about.
These actions are always done at home in your privacy and to do
it in such a public setting is not really common and it is a radical move.

People were definitely watching us however noone joined.
Sound was definitely a factor that would have an impact on the people.

Started a design strategy and communications for HairScapes.

Initial ideas and thoughts.

Open Calls sent out on whatsapp with explanations.

This initial designs were colourful and had coils and curls to represent the
hair textures and the  uniqueness of the our hairtype.
The statement of women of colour became an idea that ran through in my
following sketches to make the performers to standout.

I  also did sketches  to envision the idea of colours  and making more bold statements at the Theater and also the different themes in actions
with the performers and also actions

This information from paper, was interesting to start the conception
of installation ideas and create ideas with cultural levels.

Looked for hair extensions at the location in Basel.

The hair extensions they sell. Purchased these for the ideas to come to life

Interviews with these 4 women added to the reasearch to set the path way for the new designs which I was working on.

Curating the space and program was necessary and speaking to the Keabetswe
Boccomoni who runs Afrinova and following Walesca Frank who runs Black Stammtisch
a community page and space for black experiences.

The path way for a performative, community based and identity base on an instagram
page became important to reach other people and therfore this online platform began.

I had a brief meeting with Walesca and Asked her about Black Stammtisch.

I also started to  look at African/African Diaspora,  Artists who presented and exhibited their work in Switzerland.

I created a logo and and an instagram page to start an online archive and also to have an identity.
