South Africa Museum - Zeitz MOCAA, the interesting views of art and differences in the museum spaces in Bokap. As well as the seeing other elements on the internet like the Architecture museum.

Initial thoughts and ideas that triggered the question and the
brainstorming. The  research starts of with a collection of images from
different sites visited in South Africa. Also other interesting references
picked up along the process of research that evoked a lot of questions
surrounding museums.

The rooftop at the Zeitz MOCAA. I also attended an art fair in
Capetown.

//2

The trip to South Africa was during the time of definining the research
question and the similarity in Museum spaces in South Africa to the ones
in Europe was a defining moment. The White walls and its effect even with
the different regions, is a standardization which became a topic of interest.

Image illustrations of the design using textile references in market places in Kenya.

//3

The images used are textile exhibitions which I adapt to showcase the artwork
as installations of textiles this is inspired from market scenes where these textiles
are sold. This context being a missing element that can enable the work to be seen
differently from the White Cube. First steps, ideas, inspiration and catalysts from
using an artists such as Thandiwe Muriu, whereby I reference the textiles as a form
of exhibition.

Pinterest mood board, evolved and has new content - https://pin.it/3wI12P6YF.

Other research that I collected was from African spaces and museums
that has an interesting take to the art institutions. The discovery of such
a musuem space in African institutions, through social media shows the
learning from different platforms.

Zoma museum in Ethiopia thats is has an indigenous approach that has not been seen maintining its cultural contexts. The building and the activities
within the space has an interesting take, that has not adopted the Eurocentric ideals, the use of their culture in theis place is key for African Institutions.

Another element which kick-started the brainstorming for the previous
installation mockups is related to collecting mood board. This process
as an enlightening gesture that led me to decisions on researching specific
artists in-depth for case studies.

Artist Talk of Otobong Nkanga at Foundation Beyeler.

//6

The first research which created a whirl wind of ideas, attending Artists Talks.
This process was an enlightening aspect that led me to decision of researching
specific artists in-depth for case studies and learning strategies that may be
effective.

Some notes from Otobong Artist talk that I used as a basis for research :- What comes into this area using space with aromas and can smell elements.
- A play on performance moving through space in her artwork. Connecting to memories many elements
- Sense of sight refers to the place, location sets the voice.
- To understand history and how the space has evolved, create a landscape, bodies lying in space which
you can walk through.
- History of the place the possible future of the place.
- Listen to sound and think about materials ways in which her ideas ground for conversation
- Space and place , its not just about connecting but it’s about thinking how certain geographies
have shifted.
- What the land offers what space offers material changing, norishment of a place ,
space and material.
- Powerful aesthetic of performances and installations and looking at space and structures
- Many ways of entering into an artwork, trigger something else different possibilities with
6 senses the relation.
- Ways of working with the senses.
- Ways in which tone color and atmosphere translating it in space.
- Science of fragility etc.
- She uses also poetry it allows to touch the most important of emotions.
- What do you hope to achieve with her works ?
- Her interest is why she puts this work in the world and what should it be doing?
- How does this work find its end life, works that resonates with young generations and how the work is
seen in the West.
- Resolving many questions she has understand the world she lives in, and existence in the world.
- The idea of connecting to create bridges, tied to the other side.
- African philosophy and mythology, concepts, curatorial practices and breaking your work
into chapters.

Intentions
Reading more papers

Look into books of Installation to start sketches. Found out about Onome an artist,
request to use her as an example for
this experience:

    • - She is already into AI
    • - She is female and you can collaborate with her in physical.
    • - Do research on her before delving deeper
    • - Where is she from?
    • - She is also African Diaspora
  • Narrowing down to public art in Switzerland for African Artists in Diaspora and they
  • home contexts and you can.

Happenings
  • The nature means the appeal, the essence of African people, the installation must carry the nature of African
  • people.
  • What should make it stand out is beyond its representational  appeal in aesthetic but in embodiment and in
  • social context, situating these social bonds.

  • In terms of the sociocultural context must be elevated —— the distinctive
  • features —— and highlighted:
    • - Who they are.
    • - What they do.
    • - How they express.
  • Characteristic nature of African people especially each nation e.g.:
  •                          - Togetherness.

Activist artwork that has the following themes of:
self-love,
social transfromation,
and justice.

Her art is inspired by elements in thge world around her such as:

  • politics,
  • social movements,
  • feminism,
  • body positivity,
  • natural beauty,
  • African aesthetics,
  • random images & sound,
  • her feelings and more

Started sketches and also associating contexts use locations she refers too in
some of her art:
  • Critical reflection with FUNKE (sustainability aspect),
  • Alternative world of serious and unserious.

Notes from Public Art for public life:-

  • Public art helps us to overcome our fear of an unknown future.
  • Help see new meaning in and beauty in wind farms, solar plants, new
  • delta works, circular industrial estates, production forests, climate swamps,
  • and all other space devouring systems that will change our cities, towns and
  • landscapes beyond recognition.
  • how to relook at spatial manifestations of the inevitable that are coming our
  • way transformations

Why these structures have to mimic play structures.
Because as a child, they do not judge they embrace without any
hindrances unencumbered and unhinged experiences such as play
structures that trigger adult minds and make people experience and
unleash their inner child that cannot be withheld.
  • Adult play structures.
  • The childlike nature of experimenting with objects, in socio cultural, to
  • Understand their curiosity with no fears — exploring the innocence of
  • children before adulthood.

AI generated images with Midjourney.

//9

I started my process with AI Midjouney tool to realise a simulation of the
installation with image and prompt of my sketches.
Notes:

Trying sketches with Midjourney, Afrofuturistc prompts.
Trying to do fine tuning and using the possibility of 3D structures with both
dimensions included.

Artist Talk with Carrie Mae Weems at Kunstmuseum.  She explains the impact of spaces and her projects one of her with museums in the US.

//10

April 2

This initial research became a basis that already solidified and
opened my thoughts to the importance of African Diaspora
community to become more visible in Swiss Art Institutions.

Notes from Carrie Mae Weems Panel Talk at the Kunstmuseum:
- No one taught her about African-American culture at that time.
- Who is doing what in the African
American scene in the field.
- Are you welcome into this space in the museum?
- What does it mean to belong in a place?
- Code to tell you what the space is for
- What is it for whom is it for - Confronting these spaces that have barred mean
- What is the diversity and inclusivity mean - Who you surround yourself with
- Museums around the United States - Brown people and brown people extension
of humanity in the face of despair
- What is their intention, why they want to exhibit your work,
the inclusion of black people and why?
- Black aesthetic - is important to create a certain message and experience
- Renewed to introduce us to new movements a wave of change
- Reenactment - To make an impact curation and regular presentation
- Accessibility and present how society looks like
- How the public looks like
- Race, identity and social justice.

Research based on concept design of a culturally inspired product which is a installation product/art.  This is a model that is showing a planning, concept development and system-level design.
It was helpful to use however there was a missing skillset on installation design.

//11

This information from paper, was interesting to start the conception
of installation ideas and create ideas with cultural levels.

Image of the book from the library.

Intentions
Reading book - page 09 is important:
the core of installation art is play , makes the art not only interesting
but warmer.
Art installations are supposed to give the experience of three dimensional
space through emotional arousal.
Installations change the concept of the environment creating a special
connection with nature adding magic to the existing place
Site + material + emotional expression ——— installation art makes innovation
in terms of emotional expression first stage is to conception:

  • reference to the works of other artists
  • selection of appropriate ways of expression
  • appearance and materials of the installation
  • sketches and drawings
things to think of are, pg. 10:
  • how the installation will perceive the viewers behaviour
  • how to process behaviours and reflect them

Page 17:
some interactive proejects are not necessarily digital
audiences role changes from passive appreciation to active
participation
the role of audience participation and interaction in the experience
of the installation.

The Energy Pavilion

//13

Features of interactive installations pg 20
Change from viewing mode to engagingly active mode
Sharing features with traditional installation art :

  • intergrate, participatory, artistic and public
Interactive installation possesses more features such as entertainment, high-tech and instantaneity
  • unique audio visual experience
  • improve audience participation
The four stages of interaction by British artists on pg 21:
  • adaptation
  • learning
  • anticipation
  • deeper understanding

Taking care of the space where installation is setup is important and its
interactive modes.
Interactive modes of interactive installation pg 21
  1. body movements
  2. gesture
  3. touch
  4. face
  5. additional equipement

Laetitia Ky

Thandiwe Muriu

Mary Sibande
Laetitia Ky, Thandiwe Muriu and Mary Sibande. Their art is very inspirational and speaks on important themes that have rich cultural contexts. This is necessary in to delve into to enrich
the Swiss Context of the different cultures in the African culture.

//14

There were a lot of African and African Diaspora to choose from however
I had a few artists whose work trully inspired the work process which I had
I had to select artists that I required to create installation designs. The artists
I selected were Laetitia Ky, Thandiwe Muriu and Mary Sibande at first.
However that I changed this later on.

The interview with Onome.

//15

Great insights collected from this interview with Onome, she speaks on a clinical
whiteness in musuems.
Some higlights and important quotes that stayed with me from the conversations
we had:

“ it's expressed in the way HEK can present things Yeah, like, that's, I mean, of course,
I'm wrestling with this idea of myself about gallery spaces in general, like the, the just
sort of clinical whiteness. “

“ it should be about the experience. “

I did an interview with Onome Ekeh as I selected her as an artist to replace
Mary Sibande. It was very insightful moment that brought revelation of white
cube effect in th

I also started to  look at African/African Diaspora,
Artists who presented and exhibited their work
in Switzerland.

You will follow the Rhine and Compose Play

//17

Looking at African diaspora artists in this paper who have exhibited in the Swiss context in this paper.
The Miroboard contains a board carrying all thoughts and information of the artists, location selection,
observation, and documentations and mapping of locations.

The participatory approach unveiled another dimension to looking at installation
simulations.
The Miroboard contains all the results from participatory approach carrying the thoughts
of students  and the results from them. Their selections on the HGK Campus.

Using this methodology I came up with concepts and  sketches having interesting simulations
that were realistic using AI and collages.

The practical approach of this research is missing and hence I started to delve into
more of an physical installation approach.

The digital approach did not apply to the research question.
So I started working on pratical output.

More reactions to me and while holding these objects.

The idea had to take on a more performative approach because as for the physical installations noone paid
attention to them and the skillset for this installation techniques is not there.
