Hairscapes - Poem by Tanyaradzwa Matseketsa (Me) Our hair from a young age it is a point of contention,
From birth, it is shaved off,
The feeling of it, the shape of it, the texture of it,
According to worldly standards it leaves a lot to be desired,
This lack of comprehension, apprehension and attention,
Which continues to ensue us as a people,
Is the power and beauty of our hair.

No matter what people say about our hair, it is a symbolism,
People are moved by its impeccable capacity,
It is an artpiece, it is a vehicle of change, it is a social ism,
It is unbeknownst to man, it is a pandoras box of impossibility,
You are tapped into activism, socialism, humanism,
It is a living and breathing ism on its own,
Is the power and beauty of our hair.

Its power to shapeshift, to form a different persona,
I am able to wake as Lupita, Brenda, LaTisha (uh), Linda, Felicia, Zendaya,
YOU NAME IT, among a gazallion individuals whilst still being me,
The ability to be a embody renaissance by just being alive,
It is an inexplicable language, almost like speaking shona, in Barcelona,
Proclaiming our stories, histories and cultures,
From different centuries it is a pulsating influence rather mesmerising mayhem,
Is the power and beauty of our hair.

Our hair creates a bond, intimately,
A relational agenda that is passionately intricate,
From a young age you know,
That my mother, auntie, sister and family will always be there for me,
Fearfully and wonderfully made, their workmanship is infinitely, ultimatelly, utterly,
Gifted, born with skills passed down from generation to generation,
A reflection of what the motherland inhibits, leaving a trace a tale as old as time,
It is a secret to our strength, encoded in our veins, a gift from God,
Is the power and beauty of our hair.

Asking all the Mums or daughters - To tell me their story of their hair journey?
How did you start taking care of your hair properly…
Why do you do your child’s hair instead of taking her to the salon?
Did you always know how to take care of your children’s hair?
How have you passed on this knowledge to your child? Or how have you bonded
with your child through this experience?
⁃    What is the ritual you do with your daughter when plaiting her hair?
Child - How do you feel when your mum does your hair?
What is your child’s experience of her hair in Switzerland? Reactions etc.
